The other day I had a virus that I got rid of. However, I noticed that since then, I have not been able to open up pretty much any of my programs the way they should be. Every time I click on a program (example, Firefox), it asks me what program I would like to open this executable file with. The only way I could bypass that was to right click and then Run as administrator.
Certain programs may not work properly, you may not have access to the internet, moving around Windows may be slow, etc., but you do get all the way in. Windows Does Not Start Successfully: You do not have access to your Desktop or Start Screen.
However, I quickly found a bigger problem. I went to change some display settings to re-setup my monitors, and sure enough. I can't open 'control.exe'!

And there's definitely no way to 'run as administrator' with that either! Has anyone come across this issue? Is there a fix for it?! Preferably not having to wipe everything or restore the software and all that stuff, since I've a LOT of things that I would end up loosing I believe, permanently too. I truly appreciate all the help and really hope that this problem can be fixed asap!
I ran the error-checking on my main drive and it said it found and fixed some errors. However, when testing to see if that worked, I still cannot open the executable files!:( Thank you again, and I hope to hear from someone soon on this! Hi, No one program can be relied upon to detect and remove all malware. Added that often easy to detect malware is often accompanied by a much harder to detect and remove payload.
So its better to be overly thorough now than to pay the high price later. Check with these to an extreme overkill point and then run the cleanup only when you are very sure the system is clean. These can be done in Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot however you should also runĀ them in regular Windows when you can.

Thanks so much for the replies. I checked and scanned for any other viruses, malware, etc and nothing has been found. I'm about to go to the link to run Checkdisk, but have to ask something first. I'm on 32bit vista, should it make a difference going to the link you provided from vistax64.com? Also, It suggests that I 'Check windows vista for registry errors' which I think is my main problem (registry errors, I would think, but that's why I'm here because I'm not sure haha).
I go to the link which brings me to liutilities.com, and asks me to run a registrybooster.exe file. Is all that safe and okay for me to do? I don't want any extra things that may try to change things or mess with my computer, when I'm just trying to find a fix for this problem I have right now before anything else. I really appreciate the help, thanks again! I think it's actually an ad, but it's near the top of the page you had linked to, on vista64.com to Restore Default Vista File Extension Type Associations, that's why I figured I might need to do that before, but you pretty much confirmed that I really don't need to do that.
Thanks SO much for the continued help. I'm going to follow through with the (hopeful) fix, when I get back home this afternoon. Thanks again, and I'll be sure to be right back to let you know if this did indeed fix the problem!:). Hi, Vistax64 has no Ads from Brink, the Operator.

Well I think the ad is from google. I took a screen cap of the ad on the site and uploaded it to photobucket: Hovering over the link/ad, it gives me the following URL: So I think it's just a regular googleads thing that I thought was actually part of the vista64 site at first. I'm going to go ahead and try the link to restore default vista file extension type associations, and hopefully that'll fix this issue!
